Bat Cave Adventure
May 12, 2012
We picked Bridget up last night and this morning we headed out to Woodward's Cave east of State College. It was about 2 and a half hours each way but we took differet ways up and back with stops so it didn't seem that long, the weather was perfect, the countryside beautiful and we were back home at 3. We went there because it offered the best chance to see bats. We were lucky enough to see a brown bat. A few years ago there were 4,000 bats in that cave but now there are less than 50 due to 'white nose syndrome' which has decimated the bat population in the northeastern US. The tour was very interesting as the guide pointed out the various formations and discussed the geology, history and legends associated with the cave system.
