Going to Sedona
On Tuesday we attended a Trilogy coffee chat with JJ Spahn’s parents who live in Trilogy. They talked about his growing up and his (their) trip into the world of Professional golf. They were very interesting and down-to-earth. Their pictures and discussions were extremely informative and entertaining. After the session we headed off the Sedona for an overnight stay. We have been in Sedona in the past but we wanted to stay overnight to get a view of the Milky Way, the Perseids meteor shower and to finally get to the Sedonuts shop. They close at noon, and we were always there in the afternoon. Wanting to stay at a place with a local flavor I booked the evening at the Matterhorn Inn in Uptown Sedona. We drove up I-17 and then through Oak Creek and Bell Rock. The scenery is spectacular with the red rock mountains and cliffs. One tends to forget its grandeur and are awed by it every time we see it. Just as we got into Sedona we stopped at Mooney’s Irish Pub and Burger Bar where I had fish & chips and Alesa had a BLT. We arrived at the Inn around 12:30 and way before check-in time. The clerk gave us a parking pass and some discount coupons and she said we could check in early around 3 PM. We drove around a little then went to Red Rock State Park and its visitors center. I have a Veterans AZ state park pass and they had never seen one before so it took them a while to check it out but they were friendly and courteous the whole time. On the drive out we noticed a building on the side of a cliff which looked very interesting. We took pictures as we approached since we didn’t know how close we would get. We wanted to get good pictures to send to Bailey, the Architect in the family. Turned out we drove right underneath it and got some good pictures. It appears to be a private home and the residents use a gondola on a couple of cables to get to and from it. On the way back to the Inn we drove by the Airport Mesa Vortex but the parking was full so we continued up to the airport which sits on a mesa way above the town offering some spectacular views. There were still no open spots on our way down so we headed to the Inn.
