Root Beer

July 9, 2012

We have been searching all over for root beer extract to make some home made root beer like we did when we were younger. We haven't had any luck so today we headed out to Lancaster to try the Amish markets there. We stopped at a country store on the way and they recommended an Amish 'supply' store just up the road. We stopped at the "Hillside" where routes 10 and 340 meet and they had it as well a number of other interesting things. Now we can make our root beer. We did find an alternate root beer recipe using dry ice and did use it the other day to make cream soda with vanilla extract. It was a little flat since we didn't use a cooler with a lid but it was pretty good nonetheless and later turned into a "Rita's" type slushee which we are still using to cool off. I took the remaining dry ice with me to Jeff's before we took a long motorcycle ride down to the Maryland side of the Chesapeake. We put it in a bucket of water and the kids enjoyed watching the fog it created.
After our successful search today we stopped at "The Whip" for lunch. It is an English Pub in horse country. Alesa had Fish and Chips and I had Bangers and Mash. They were both very good and we couldn't tell we weren't back in England.
